Start an Indoor Garden in Your Boston Apartment

Just because you live in a Boston apartment, it does not necessarily mean you can’t have a garden. Many people have experimented with (and succeeded) growing their own little indoor garden and so can you.

Indoor gardens in apartments allow you to grow anything from herbs to bigger fruit bearing plants provided you have the will to do it. Here’s a basic step-by-step guide to starting and maintaining your indoor apartment garden.

Choosing your Garden space

Every apartment offers multiple opportunities for placing your garden. It does not need to be one spot filled with all the pots and plants you’re growing; in fact, you can place your plants in different places all around the apartment.

Michael Penney planted these beauties in large glass jars that can easily be placed anywhere around the apartment.

And here’s Eleonore Bridge’s wonderful use of a small space to grow herbs.

Amanda and Dave came up with this cute little idea to grow some succulents.

You can also go for one of the mini greenhouses that can easily be built yourself or by a carpenter. Or you could choose from the wide variety offered online.

Let There be Light

If your favorite spot does not get adequate lighting, do not despair! There are many different kinds of grow lights that can be ordered from Amazon or maybe you can find one on eBay for cheap.

Another option is to go for one of those electronic self-watering systems like the one in the image below from Chef Cheri’s blog.

What to Grow

Although herbs like thyme, coriander, parsley or sage are an obvious choice if you’re new to gardening, you could also opt for vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes or lettuce since they are easier to maintain.

After you have a good idea of how to handle your indoor garden, you can move on to bigger pots and bigger plants and an increased supply of organic fruits and vegetables.
